Navigating the Industry - Practical Know-How at STZ07

A key part of SoundTrack_Zurich 07 is the Industry Know-How: This edition brings panels and workshops offering useful tools to navigate the media music business.

SUISA's Noah Martin (General Secretary) and Andres Pfister (Musicologist) will clarify when, and under what circumstances, it is possible to use third-party, copyright-protected material as "pastiche" (e.g., through music sampling, remixes, or memes) without the authors' permission, in light of the European Court of Justice's ruling on pastiche issued in April this year.

Sync agent and music supervisor Hanna-Greth Peetson will lead a workshop on how metadata can help boost a sync placement and what to consider when refining existing metadata. Through practical examples, she will offer clear and actionable tips to improve visibility and opportunities for professionals involved in the audiovisual industries.

The composer Yevgeni Birkhoff will present the workshop "Build Your Own Plugin With AI - Without Knowing How to Code". A hands-on panel to explore the impact of AI in music production.

What is the purpose of an agent or a manager, and how can they help advance the career of a film composer and other artists? Annette Gentz (Annette Gentz Film & Music Arts, General Manager at Universal Music Publishing Classics & Screen), Séverine Abhervé (Glaz Composer Agency) and Antonio Cárdenas (Heartfelt Management) will discuss these questions and more about the role of agents and managers today.

A workshop focused on transferring music from MIDI to orchestra will be led by conductor Enrico Delamboye. Delamboye has been Principal Guest Conductor of the WDR Funkhausorchester Cologne since 2018. From a conductor's perspective, he analyses what even experienced orchestrators can improve when preparing music for orchestra.
