Zum elften Mal findet der renommierte Internationale Filmmusikwettbewerb im Rahmen der «Cinema in Concert»-Gala am 30. September 2023 in der Tonhalle Zürich statt. Eine prominente Jury wird unter der Leitung von Oscarpreisträger Volker Bertelmann (IM WESTEN NICHTS NEUES) eine der vom Tonhalle-Orchester live eingespielten Kompositionen mit dem Goldenen Auge für die beste Filmmusik auszeichnen.
Das Zurich Film Festival und die Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich AG veranstalten in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Forum Filmmusik dieses Jahr zum elften Mal den Internationalen Filmmusikwettbewerb. Für alle Wettbewerbsteilnehmerinnen und -teilnehmer gilt es, eine neue und eigene Musik zum Kurzfilm AU REVOIR JÉRÔME! zu kreieren. «Die Auseinandersetzung mit Filmmusik bildet einen Schwerpunkt am ZFF», erklärt Artistic Director Christian Jungen. «Mit dem Filmmusikwettbewerb fördern wir junge Talente und geben ihnen die Möglichkeit, dass ihre Kompositionen vom Tonhalle-Orchester, das im Bereich Symphonik zur Weltspitze gehört, vor grossem Publikum live aufgeführt wird.»
Die internationale Jury wird aus den eingereichten Kompositionen drei Werke nominieren. Diese werden am 30. September 2023 anlässlich der «Cinema in Concert»-Gala in der Tonhalle Zürich durch das Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich unter der musikalischen Leitung von Frank Strobel und in Anwesenheit der Nominierten uraufgeführt. «Für die Nominierten ist es immer sehr spannend, wenn das Orchester ihr Werk aufführt, das geschieht sehr selten. Und für das Publikum kann sich der Film je nach Musik verändern», sagt Marc Barwisch, Leiter Künstlerischer Betrieb der Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich. Die Jury wird am selben Abend die Gewinnerkomposition erküren und das mit 10‘000 Franken dotierte Goldene Auge für die «Best International Film Music 2023» überreichen.
Die diesjährige Jury wird präsidiert von Volker Bertelmann, auch bekannt unter seinem Künstlernamen Hauschka, der dieses Jahr für seine Filmmusik zum Welterfolg IM WESTEN NICHTS NEUES den Oscar gewonnen hat. «Es ist für mich eine grosse Ehre Jurypräsident des IFMW Zürich 2023 zu sein», betont der Komponist und Pianist und ergänzt: «Komponistinnen und Komponisten die Möglichkeit zu eröffnen, sich der Öffentlichkeit zu präsentieren und Anregungen für ihre Arbeit zu bekommen ist für mich ein wichtiges Anliegen und ich freue mich auf den Austausch.»

Wie auch schon in den letzten Jahren wird die Jury durch den deutschen Dirigent Frank Strobel ergänzt, der am Abend das Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich dirigieren wird. Der international preisgekrönte Filmkomponist und Emmy-Gewinner Mark Bächle ist zudem auch als Special Guest vor Ort und ein Medley aus seinen bekanntesten Werken wird zu seinen Ehren in Zusammenarbeit mit der Suisa gespielt. Ergänzt wird die Jury durch die preisgekrönte Regisseurin Sophie Linnenbaum, die ihren Erstling THE ORDINARIES im Fokus Wettbewerb des 18. ZFF vorgestellt hatte, sowie Regisseurin und Animatorin Gabrielle Selnet, deren Kurzfilm AU REVOIR JÉRÔME! für den Wettbewerb gewählt wurde. Der zu vertonende Kurzfilm von Gabrielle Selnet, Adam Sillard und Chloé Farr handelt von einer facettenreichen und bittersüssen Liebesgeschichte im Jenseits.

Das Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) ist das zweitgrösste Festival im deutschsprachigen Raum und präsentiert jeden Herbst während 11 Tagen die schönsten Entdeckungen sowie die meist erwarteten Filme des Jahres. For the eleventh time, the renowned International Film Music Competition will take place as part of the "Cinema in Concert" gala on September 30, 2023 at the Tonhalle Zurich. A prominent jury presided over by Oscar-winner Volker Bertelmann (ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT) will award the Golden Eye for Best Film Music to one of the compositions performed live by the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich.
This year, the Zurich Film Festival and the Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich AG join forces with the Forum Filmmusik for the eleventh time to organise the International Film Music Competition. Entrants are required to create a new and original score for the short film AU REVOIR JÉRÔME! (GOODBYE, JEROME). "The exploration of film music plays a pivotal role at the ZFF," explains Artistic Director Christian Jungen. "The Film Music Competition aims to promote young talent by giving them the opportunity to have their compositions performed live in front of a large audience by the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, which is one of the world's leading symphony orchestras."
The international jury nominates three compositions from all that entered. The musical works will be performed publicly for the first time in the presence of the nominees during the "Cinema in Concert" gala on September 30, 2023 at the Tonhalle Zurich by the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich under the musical direction of Frank Strobel. "It is always very exciting for the nominees when their work is performed by an orchestra; this happens very rarely. And the audience gets to experience how a film can change dramatically depending on the music," says Marc Barwisch, Head of Artistic Operations Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich AG. The jury will announce the winner on the same evening before presenting the 10'000 Swiss franc-endowed Golden Eye for "Best International Film Music 2023".
This year's jury will be presided over by Volker Bertelmann, also known by his stage name Hauschka, who won an Oscar this year for his scoring of the internationally successful ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT. "I am exceptionally honoured to have been selected as the jury president of the IFMC Zurich 2023," expressed the composer and pianist, who continued: "Offering composers the opportunity to present themselves to the public and receive input for their work is of great importance to me, and I am looking forward to the interaction immensely."

As in previous years, the jury will include the German conductor Frank Strobel, who will conduct the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich on the gala evening. Additionally, the international award-winning film score composer and Emmy-winner Mark Baechle will make a special guest appearance and, with the support of Suisa, a medley of his best-known works will be performed in his honour. Further members of the jury are the award-winning director Sophie Linnenbaum, who presented her debut THE ORDINARIES in the 18th ZFF's Focus Competition, and director and animator Gabrielle Selnet, whose short film AU REVOIR JÉRÔME! (GOODBYE, JEROME) was selected for the competition. Created by Gabielle Selnet, Adam Sillard and Chloé Farr, the short film to be scored is about a multifaceted and bittersweet love story in the afterlife.
